Microsoft 365 vs. Office 2024 vs. Google Docs: Which Should You Actually Buy?

The short answer: Pay for Microsoft 365 if you want Copilot inside Word and Excel, work on several devices, and use OneDrive. Buy a legitimate one-time Office license if you mainly want Word and Excel on one computer without another subscription. Use free Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides if browser-based collaboration is more important than advanced Microsoft Office compatibility.

1. Do you get Copilot in both versions of Microsoft Office?

No. This is one of the biggest differences. Microsoft 365 Personal includes Copilot features inside the desktop Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook apps, subject to AI usage limits, feature availability, and subscription conditions. Office Home 2024 is a one-time purchase of classic desktop apps and does not include a Copilot subscription. You can still use a separate web-based AI assistant alongside it, but that is not the same as having Copilot integrated into your Office apps.

Google's answer is Gemini, not Copilot. Basic personal Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides are free. Gemini features integrated into those editors generally require an eligible Google AI or Workspace plan. Free access to a separate AI chatbot does not mean you get the integrated writing and spreadsheet features.

Important: Microsoft 365 Family can be shared for Office and storage benefits, but its included AI benefits are generally limited to the subscription owner. Do not assume every family member gets Copilot in Word.

3. Why would you choose one over another?

Choose Microsoft 365 if...

You want to ask Copilot to rewrite a Word document, help with an Excel formula, summarize an Outlook thread, or draft a presentation inside PowerPoint. You switch between a laptop and desktop, want a large OneDrive allowance, and prefer Microsoft to keep adding features. The tradeoff is recurring cost and AI usage limits. Some Excel Copilot features require saving the file to OneDrive with AutoSave on.

Choose one-time Office 2024 if...

You already know Word and Excel, use one computer, store files locally, and have no interest in paying for Copilot or 1 TB of cloud storage. Office Home 2024 is the lower-cost official consumer one-time option, but does not include desktop Outlook. If you need Outlook for work or business use, compare Office Home & Business 2024 instead. Remember that Office 2024 will not turn into a future major release at no charge.

Choose Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides if...

You share lists, family budgets, proposals, and everyday documents with other people and want to edit the same file together. The free tools are often enough. The drawback is compatibility: an Excel workbook with VBA macros, complex financial models, or exact formatting may not survive an editor change without work. Test an important file before switching. Paid Gemini integration is a separate decision.

4. Is the $30 Office 2024 offer on Groupon a good deal?

It might look like a bargain. Some Groupon listings advertise Office 2024 activation for less than $50. But the listing is not necessarily the same product or licensing arrangement as Microsoft's official Office Home 2024 retail purchase.

Groupon's MyCodes24 FAQ explicitly says its offer supplies a product key, not a license, and warns activation might stop working after a device change or reinstallation. It also says Copilot is not included. For a computer you depend on, verify the edition, source, license rights, activation method, and reinstall rights before purchasing. A low price is not proof of a properly licensed lifetime copy.

Read Groupon's product-key terms. Compare Microsoft's official Office 2024 editions.

5. What will each option cost over five years?

Change the prices and number of years below. The calculator compares subscription expense with a one-time purchase. It does not put a dollar value on Copilot, OneDrive storage, or compatibility, so the cheapest option may not be the best one for you.

Editable examples, not guaranteed prices. Assumes constant pricing, one Office 2024 license on one computer, no upgrades, taxes or add-on AI subscription costs. A discount-key price is not confirmation of valid license rights.

My practical recommendation

If you're happy using Word and Excel on one PC and don't need Copilot, an official one-time Office purchase can be the sensible choice. If you actually use AI inside your documents, work across devices, and want OneDrive, Microsoft 365 has meaningful benefits. If you mostly write simple documents, share spreadsheets with friends, and want to spend nothing, start with Google's free tools. You can move to a paid product later if you find something missing.
